Children are the inspiration for my paintings. I am delighted by their straightforward conversation, egocentric thinking and easy humor. Their spontaneous behavior and the very real and unsophisticated way they present themselves to the world is captivating. Children are not ideal subjects as they detest sitting still, they are absorbed in their own worlds, and their features are softly formed and undefined. However, these are the very qualities that I find compelling and charming.
In my paintings, I attempt to capture a fleeting moment in an individual child’s development and the steps along the road to adulthood taken by every child. I portray children in everyday situations that honor the simple things they enjoy. I strive to create a quiet intimacy that radiates kindness and serenity. When adults view my art, I hope that my paintings jog childhood memories or are reminders of fleeting moments with their children. When children view my art, I hope that they see themselves.
